The Pacific War was the part of World War II that was fought in the Pacific Ocean, East Asia, and Southeast Asia from 1941 to 1945. This conflict primarily involved the Empire of Japan against the United States, British Commonwealth, Republic of China, and later the Soviet Union, among other Allied powers.
Origins and Context
The roots of the Pacific War trace back to Japanese expansionism and imperialism in the early 20th century. Japan, seeking to secure natural resources and strategic territories, had already annexed Korea in 1910 and invaded Manchuria in 1931. The Second Sino-Japanese War began in 1937, escalating tensions in the region. The war in the Pacific officially started on December 7, 1941, when Japan launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, leading to the United States formally entering the war.
Major Battles and Events
- Attack on Pearl Harbor - December 7, 1941, which brought the U.S. into the war.
- Battle of Midway - June 1942, considered a turning point where the U.S. inflicted significant damage on the Japanese fleet.
- Guadalcanal Campaign - August 1942 to February 1943, a prolonged and fierce battle marking the first major offensive by Allied forces against Japan.
- Battle of Leyte Gulf - October 1944, the largest naval battle of the war, where the Japanese naval power was significantly diminished.
- Battle of Iwo Jima - February to March 1945, infamous for its intense fighting and high casualties.
- Battle of Okinawa - April to June 1945, the last major battle of the war, which resulted in significant losses on both sides.
End of the War
The Pacific War ended with the surrender of Japan on August 15, 1945, following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the United States, as well as the Soviet Union's declaration of war against Japan and invasion of Manchuria. The formal Instrument of Surrender was signed on September 2, 1945, aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay.

- War crimes trials, including the Tokyo Trials, where leaders of the Japanese military were prosecuted.
- Redrawing of national borders and establishment of new political entities in East Asia.
- Significant changes in international relations, particularly in the dynamics between Asia and the Western powers.
