Omar Khayyam, born Ghiyath al-Din Abu'l-Fath Umar ibn Ibrahim Al-Nisaburi al-Khayyami, was a Persian mathematician, astronomer, philosopher, and poet, who lived from 1048 to 1131. His multifaceted contributions have left a lasting legacy in several fields:
Khayyam made significant contributions to algebra, particularly in the classification and solution of cubic equations. His work, "Treatise on Demonstration of Problems of Algebra," introduced the geometric method of solving cubic equations, which was a precursor to the development of algebra in Europe. He also worked on the parallel postulate, providing one of the earliest attempts to prove Euclid's fifth postulate, which later led to the development of non-Euclidean geometry.
He reformed the Persian calendar with the help of a group of scholars, creating the Jalali calendar, which was more accurate than the Gregorian calendar for nearly 300 years. His work in astronomy also included detailed observations and calculations, which were advanced for his time.
Khayyam was known for his philosophical skepticism, questioning traditional religious beliefs, which often put him at odds with orthodox religious authorities. His views on metaphysics, particularly his critique of Aristotelian logic, were innovative and contributed to the development of philosophical thought in the Islamic Golden Age.
Perhaps the most famous aspect of Khayyam's legacy in the West is his poetry. His quatrains (rubaiyat) were translated into English by Edward FitzGerald in the 19th century, known as "The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam." These verses celebrate life's pleasures, reflect on the human condition, and often express a skepticism about religious dogma, focusing instead on the enjoyment of the present moment.
His life was marked by political upheavals, and he spent much of his career moving between various cities like Nishapur, Isfahan, and Bukhara, where he served as a court astronomer and philosopher under different patrons. Despite his scientific and mathematical prowess, it was his poetry that brought him posthumous fame, especially in the West.
