New York City, often simply referred to as New York or NYC, is the most populous city in the United States. Located at the southern tip of the state of New York, the city is the center of the New York metropolitan area, which is among the most populous urban agglomerations in the world.
The history of New York City dates back to the early 17th century when it was first settled by the Dutch under the name "New Amsterdam." It was renamed New York after being taken over by the British in 1664 in honor of the Duke of York, who later became King James II of England.
