Interwoven
Interwoven was a company originally founded in 1995 as Interwoven Systems by Mark Michael, Peng T. Ong, and Dr. Carl R. D. Kasling. The company was known for its pioneering work in the field of enterprise content management (ECM) software solutions, focusing on web content management (WCM), digital asset management (DAM), and document management.
History
- Founding and Early Years: Interwoven was established in Silicon Valley with the aim of providing tools that could help companies manage their web content more effectively. The company's first product, Interwoven TeamSite, was released in 1999, which quickly became a market leader in web content management.
- Expansion: By the early 2000s, Interwoven expanded its offerings to include other ECM solutions like Interwoven LiveSite, which allowed for dynamic content delivery, and Interwoven MediaBin, a digital asset management system.
- Acquisitions: Over the years, Interwoven acquired several companies to broaden its product portfolio:
- In 2005, Interwoven acquired Intraspect for its enterprise search capabilities.
- In 2007, it bought Optimost, enhancing its offerings in web optimization and personalization.
- Acquisition by Autonomy: In January 2009, Autonomy Corporation acquired Interwoven for approximately $775 million. This acquisition was part of Autonomy's strategy to expand its portfolio in the information management space.
- HP Acquisition: Later, in 2011, Hewlett-Packard (HP) acquired Autonomy, including Interwoven's technologies, for $10.2 billion. However, post-acquisition, the value of Autonomy was significantly written down by HP due to various controversies, leading to the eventual de-emphasis of the Interwoven brand.
Products
Interwoven's core products included:
- Interwoven TeamSite - A web content management system designed for large-scale enterprise use, enabling collaborative content creation and deployment.
- Interwoven LiveSite - A solution for delivering dynamic, personalized web content.
- Interwoven MediaBin - A digital asset management tool that allowed companies to store, manage, and distribute digital media assets.
- Interwoven ContentServer - A document management system for storing and managing business documents.
Legacy
Although the Interwoven brand has largely been absorbed into the products and services of HP and later OpenText (after HP's software division was sold to OpenText in 2016), its contributions to ECM and WCM are significant. The technology and methodologies developed by Interwoven continue to influence the ECM market, with many of its original solutions still in use or evolved into modern offerings by OpenText.
