Guerlain is a French perfume, cosmetics, and skincare house, which was founded in 1828 by Pierre-François Pascal Guerlain. It is one of the oldest perfume houses in the world, known for its luxurious products and contributions to the fragrance industry.
History
- Foundation: The company was started by Pierre-François Pascal Guerlain in Paris. He opened his first shop, Guerlain Boutique, at 42, rue de Rivoli, where he sold pomades, perfumed soaps, and other personal care items.
- Expansion: Under Pierre-François and his sons, Aimé and Gabriel Guerlain, the business expanded. They began to develop fragrances that would become legendary in the perfume world. In 1840, they created Eau de Cologne Impériale for Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III, marking the beginning of Guerlain's royal connections.
- Golden Era: The late 19th and early 20th centuries were the golden age for Guerlain. Jacques Guerlain, son of Gabriel, joined the company and created some of the most iconic fragrances like Jicky (1889), Shalimar (1925), and Mitsouko (1919). These fragrances set new standards in perfumery with their complex compositions.
- Modernization: Jean-Paul Guerlain, the last family member to run the company, introduced several successful modern fragrances like Habit Rouge (1965) and Vetiver (1959). However, in 1994, the company was sold to the LVMH luxury goods group, although Jean-Paul continued to create fragrances until his retirement in 2002.
- Post-Acquisition: After the acquisition by LVMH, Guerlain has seen continued innovation and expansion under the creative direction of master perfumers like Thierry Wasser and now Delphine Jelk.
