Gerlachovský štít is the highest peak in the Slovakia and in the entire Carpathian Mountains. It reaches an elevation of 2,655 meters (8,711 feet) above sea level, making it a significant landmark not only in Slovakia but also in Central Europe.
Located within the High Tatras, which is the highest range of the Tatra Mountains, Gerlachovský štít stands in the northern part of the country, near the border with Poland. The peak is part of the Gerlachovská veža, a distinct rock formation that contributes to its prominence.
The name Gerlachovský štít derives from the German name "Gerlsdorfer Spitze," which was named after the village of Gerlsdorf (now called Hranovnica). It was first officially mentioned in 1563. The current Slovak name was established in the 19th century. Before that, the peak was known by various names, reflecting its importance and the interest it garnered from mountaineers and explorers.
The area around Gerlachovský štít is protected as part of the Tatra National Park, which was established in 1948. This park aims to preserve the unique alpine environment, flora, and fauna. Visitors are encouraged to respect the environment by following designated paths and adhering to park regulations.
Gerlachovský štít holds a special place in Slovak culture, often featured in literature, art, and folklore. It symbolizes the strength and beauty of the Slovak landscape and has become an emblem of national pride.
