Colombey-les-Deux-Églises
Colombey-les-Deux-Églises is a commune located in the Haute-Marne department in the Grand Est region of France. This village is most notably recognized for its association with Charles de Gaulle, the former President of France, who made it his home after his retirement from politics.
Geography
The commune is situated approximately 50 kilometers southeast of Troyes, in the eastern part of France. It covers an area of about 78 square kilometers and has a relatively small population, which as of the last census was around 700 inhabitants.
History
- Early History: The area was originally settled due to its strategic location on a hilltop, providing a defensive position. The name "les-Deux-Églises" (the two churches) refers to the two historical churches in the village, though one no longer exists.
- Charles de Gaulle: In 1934, Charles de Gaulle purchased the La Boisserie estate in Colombey-les-Deux-Églises. He spent much time there, especially after his retirement, and it became his final resting place. Following his death in 1970, he was buried in the village cemetery, which has since become a place of pilgrimage for admirers.
