Black Holes
A Black Hole is a region of spacetime where gravity is so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape. Here are some key points about black holes:
- Formation: Black holes are formed from the remnants of massive stars that have collapsed at the end of their lives. When a star burns through the last of its fuel, it may explode into a Supernova, after which gravity takes over, causing the leftover core to collapse into an incredibly dense point known as a singularity.
- Event Horizon: Surrounding the singularity is the Event Horizon, which marks the boundary beyond which escape is impossible. Anything that crosses the event horizon is considered to be within the black hole.
- Types of Black Holes:
- Stellar-Mass Black Holes: These are the most common, formed from the collapse of a single massive star.
- Intermediate-Mass Black Holes: These are larger than stellar-mass black holes but smaller than supermassive black holes. Their existence is still under debate.
- Supermassive Black Holes: Found at the centers of most galaxies, including our Milky Way, these black holes have masses equivalent to millions or even billions of solar masses.
- Primordial Black Holes: Hypothetical black holes that might have formed in the very early universe. Their existence is speculative and would require conditions different from those that create stellar or supermassive black holes.
- Observation: Black holes themselves are invisible, but their presence can be inferred from their effects on surrounding matter. For instance, gas and stars orbiting a black hole can emit X-rays or other radiation as they are heated up due to friction.
