Aethelred I of Wessex was the King of Wessex from 865 to 871. He was the fourth son of King Egbert and his wife, Redburga. His reign was marked by significant challenges posed by the Viking Invasions, particularly from the Great Heathen Army which had begun its invasion of England during his rule.
Aethelred's birth date is not precisely known, but he was likely born around the early 9th century. He ascended to the throne following the death of his brother, Aethelbald of Wessex, in 865. This transition of power came at a turbulent time when the Vikings were intensifying their attacks on England.
Although Aethelred's reign was short and marked by military losses, his role in the resistance against the Vikings was crucial. His brother Alfred continued the fight, eventually leading to the consolidation of Anglo-Saxon resistance and the foundation of what would become the Kingdom of England under Alfred's son, Edward the Elder.
Aethelred was married to Wulfthryth, but they had no known children. His lineage continued through his brother Alfred, who had several children, including Edward the Elder.
